I have a Gateway E-4200 machine that needs 1G of memory to put Windows 7 on
it, but the most it will take is 384M, so now I'm stuck with XP on a machine
that won't upgrade any further. Apparently I can put 3 256M memory modules
in which would be good enough for Vista Basic.

Have you tried Linux? It can be downloaded and
test run/installed free from USB or CD/DVD

If asking isn't too difficult for you, someone here probably knows
of a suitable distro for your Gateway.
